Engine Reliability
The N63 is BMW's infamous 'hot-V' twin-turbo V8. The design places turbochargers between the cylinder banks for better response, but subjects them and surrounding components to extreme heat. Oil leaks, coolant leaks, and injector failures are endemic. BMW issued a 'Customer Care Package' to address issues. Powerful but very expensive to maintain.

Known Issues – N63B44

critical Hot-V Turbo Oil & Coolant Leaks Very Common (>50%)
The N63's 'hot-V' design places turbos between the cylinder banks, causing extreme heat. Oil and coolant leaks from valve cover gaskets, turbo oil lines, and timing cover are endemic.

6-Speed Automatic (ZF 6HP)

ZF • 6-speed automatic • 2003–2014

The ZF 6-speed is an excellent torque-converter automatic used across BMW, Audi, Jaguar, and others. Smooth, responsive, and very reliable when serviced properly. The 6HP26 handles up to 600Nm. Mechatronic (valve body) issues can occur at high mileage if fluid has never been changed.
Known Issues2
high Mechatronic Unit Failure Moderate (~20%)
The mechatronic unit (integrated valve body and TCU) can fail, causing erratic shifting, limp mode, or complete transmission failure. Usually caused by degraded fluid.

8-Speed Automatic (ZF 8HP)

ZF • 8-speed automatic • 2009–present

Widely considered one of the best automatic transmissions ever made. Lightning-fast shifts, excellent efficiency, and remarkable reliability. Used across BMW's entire range from 1 Series to 7 Series. Even better with regular fluid services. The 8HP70/75 handles V8 and V12 torque.
Known Issues1
medium Mechatronic Sleeve Leak (Early Production) Occasional (~10%)
Early production 8HP units can develop a transmission fluid leak from the mechatronic sleeve connector.
Typical Mileage
