Engine Reliability
The N47 is BMW's most notorious diesel engine. Its rear-mounted timing chain is the single biggest concern – it can wear prematurely and snap, destroying the engine. The design makes replacement extremely labour-intensive. Despite this critical flaw, the engine offers good performance and fuel economy when maintained.
